Artist Statement:
My work is to show life, nature and the earth as clearly as I can.
Working Style:
I work on location with available light. For large format work, I generally use Fuji NPS color negative and scan for
final color correction and editing. I find that color negative film is crucial for its wide dynamic range and for the
quality of color, especially greens and blues. I scan at over 2000 dpi with an Imacon scanner, producing a typical file
size of 250 to 400 Mb.
For digital work, I use a Canon 1Ds Mark II with an assortment of lenses from 16mm to 300mm, depending on the subject.
Then I use Photoshop CS3 for color correction and retouching and a state of the art HP Z3100 wide format archival pigment
printer.
Background:
I was born and lived in El Paso, until moving to Boston in 1967 to attend MIT. In the early 70’s, I moved to Vermont.
Keene, New Hampshire became home in 1984. I returned to Texas in December 2004, and now live in Austin, Texas.
Professionally, I’ve worked in various capacities in graphic design, advertising and marketing. In 1986, I founded
an offset printing company in Keene, NH. It grew to 18 employees with over one million in annual sales. I sold my portion of
the company in 2004 to purse photography full time.
I earned a BA in PhotoCommunication from St. Edwards University, Austin in May 2007 completing a course of
photographic study begun at MIT from 1967 to 1971. At MIT, I worked with both Minor White and Harold Edgerton.
Minor was the poet, muse and spirit whose impact came from editing Aperture, organizing shows and especially teaching.
Doc Edgerton, inventor of the strobe and high-speed photography, never ceased to be excited when showing someone high-speed
phenomena for the first time. Those two sources, with their blend of technology and spirit drive my work.
