The sky opens up driving west off the edge of the Edwards Plateau near Ft. Stockton. For me, this is the beginning of West Texas and the open feeling of being home. Towns in the region were founded by the Spanish, by miners, by ranchers and most definitely by the coming of the railroads. Each has its own character.

19 imagesPronghorn Antelope thrive around Marfa on the plentiful grasslands and open range. They are curious and fairly tolerant of approaching humans. Their speed tops out at about 60 mph allowing them to outrun predators. Their limit comes in jumping. They rarely jump a barbed wire fence, preferring instead to scoot under the lowest strand if they have to.
